James is 24 weeks old!
I missed James turning 23 weeks old because of Thanksgiving festivities, but this past Saturday James turned 24 weeks old and I thought I should play catch-up. I think I will discontinue the weeks when he turns 6 months on the 19th as it is getting hard for me to remember how many weeks old he is!
This past week has been busy busy. Eliot finished out his semester and his LAST class EVER of his college education (hooray!). I have been a busy beaver with Christmas shopping and running errands... I feel so far behind for the holidays this year! I think I will get everything done in time, but I was starting to realize that the things I order online are approaching the cut-off for cheaper shipping. I can't believe James's first Christmas is right around the corner!
This weekend we made a trip up to visit Grandma Jan and attend the Oregon Chorale Christmas concert (which was beautiful). We also said Hi to our old kitty, which was nice. Today Eliot and I took James to his first trip to a restaurant (Panera Bread, baby!) and went shopping in Powell's books. It was a pretty good trip... I wore James in the Ergo on my back like a backpack, and he actually fell asleep!!! This is monumental because he NEVER sleeps anywhere but his crib. Granted he only slept 10 minutes or so, but it was better than nothing!
We left with plenty of time to get home before James's bedtime... but, as we are driving our 9-year-old Kia with 120,000 miles on it, we inevitably had car trouble. Right around Salem we noticed a burning smell coming from the vents... no warning lights came on and the car wasn't overheating, but we've been stranded before on the freeway so we decided to pull off into a Costco and see if the smell was coming from our engine or perhaps a car we were following. After a few whiffs under the hood, it definitely was coming from our car. To make a long story short, an hour (and a feeding) later we come to discover that having the heat on in the car causes the smell (possibly a coolant leak in the heating core according to my father). So we kept the heat off all the way home to keep the coolant from leaking and the engine from overheating. Luckily I had bundled James up nice and warm and we had warm coats, so it wasn't too bad... except for the fogging-up windows and constant fear of the car leaving us on the side of the road.
Needless to say, we need a new car.
Anyway, we are home safe and sound now and won't be driving the Kia long distances till we figure this thing out.
Oh, and we also went to tree lighting this past week as well... it was fun, lots of kids and they said a prayer beforehand. They also had live reindeer! Good times.

Foods
I thought I'd take a moment to mention how solids are going....
Here is a list of foods James does and does not like so far!
Apples- LOVES!
Pears-LOVES!
Green beans- Hates (He actually shivered in disgust when it hit his tongue and spit it out!)
Sweet potatoes- Tolerates
Rice cereal- Will eat if mixed with other foods
I will be trying pumpkin next, I think. I have to wait 4 days in between each food so we can watch for an allergic reaction.
In other news, I ordered James a super-cute diaper for Christmas, and they sent me a PINK diaper with free PURPLE baby legs. Yeah, so NOT what I ordered!
Gotta run, James is up from his nap.

Growth spurt!
I am pretty sure James is going through a growth spurt today... he has been cranky while awake, which hasn't been long.... he's slept most of the day taking 1-2 hour naps (he usually takes 45 minute naps). He's also back to eating more whereas the last week or so he's barely eaten during the day (therefore keeping me up all night with feedings every 2 hours).
The major sign that he is having a growth spurt is that he slept from 2-7am this morning, which he has never, ever done. It felt glorious to get 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep... Eliot even got eight.
Love growth spurts. It's like God knew we were sleep deprived and desperate for sleep and so planned a time every few weeks/months when James would sleep more and give us a break. Maybe he'll even sleep better after this? Who knows...
Also, I wanted to mention that James has been enjoying his solid food. He's had rice cereal (tolerates but doesn't love), sweet potatoes (mildly likes), and organic bartlett pears (LOVES!). He's such a good sport about it, the only time he's really cried was tonight when he was just cranky from the growth spurt and couldn't tolerate any more feeding.

James is starting to sit! He needs a little bit of support after a minute or so or he collapses to the side, but he sat today on my lap with my hand just on him to make sure he didn't face-plant into the floor. He was mostly supporting himself for the first time, which really surprised me. So I put him down on the floor to take a picture...

Happy Thanksgiving!!
James's first Thanksgiving was a hit! We had a great time with family coming to visit, and James did very well all day, going down for naps easily and being calm and content. Since I don't have the energy to write a play-by-play, I'll just narrate with some pics:

And then he went to bed and Eliot and I crashed. We watched National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation to kick off the holiday season and went to bed! It was a fantastic Thanksgiving, thanks to everyone who made the drive to be with us!
